Oak trees are a great addition to any home or property, giving an amazing shade canopy and brilliant foliage display. Your oak trees may also be home to a variety of animals, such as birds and squirrels, which may view the acorns scattered on the ground below as a form of treasure. However, to homeowners, these acorns can be a nuisance. If you're searching for the most efficient method to collect acorns from your yard, look no further. We have a variety of alternatives available to assist your landscape's optimal appearance and feel.
The following types of equipment are efficient for eliminating acorns from your yard:
Lawn Sweeper
If you already own a riding lawn mower, a lawn sweeper can transform it into a useful tool for removing acorns. The attachment trailed behind a riding mower or small tractor collects trash such as acorns, twigs, and leaves, among others. Depending on the model you purchase, a lawn sweeper may employ a suction device or a scooping movement to do the operation.
Leaf Vacuum
A lawn or leaf vacuum can be purchased or rented, and although it is commonly used to collect leaves, it can also be used to collect acorns. The unit is driven by a small engine and uses the attached bag to collect debris. Before purchasing or renting the equipment, confirm that the motor is powerful enough to retrieve the acorns.
Nut Gatherer/Weasel
This manual equipment comprises a long pole and cage that rolls over the grass. It collects small objects, such as acorns, as it travels over them and empties the basket when it becomes full.
Rake
Raking is an effective but less efficient alternative that may be best for smaller jobs. Gather acorns into piles, then scoop them up with your hands or a shovel. This method has the disadvantage that the rake will collect grass and other debris in its trail.
Shop Vacuum
A shop vacuum with a wide hose can make quick work of falling acorns, but the effectiveness of this method depends on the vacuum's suction power and the number and size of the acorns on the ground.
Tarps
Depending on the size of your tree, you may be able to harvest acorns by spreading a series of tarps around the trunk and shaking or manipulating the branches to release the nuts. The tarps can then be folded and emptied, or the acorns can be swept or collected into piles before being placed in your green trash or compost bin.
A lawn filled with acorns can be ugly and detrimental to the landscape. The advantages of removing acorns include:
If acorns are left on the ground for too long, they may inhibit the growth of grass.
Elimination of undesirable seedlings: Acorns may germinate and produce seedlings wherever they land.
Acorns can be uncomfortable to tread on and may cause harm if thrown by a lawn mower.
Include the duty of removing acorns from the lawn and gardens in your fall maintenance checklist in order to maintain a lush, green lawn and an attractive landscape.
