Fleas are little, dark-colored parasites that feed on the blood of animals and birds. In addition to making your dogs unpleasant and itchy, fleas can spread diseases and parasites; thus, you should make every effort to safeguard your home, yard, and animals from these and other bothersome insects. While there are numerous commercial sprays and applications for flea prevention and control, you may want to try a DIY flea spray first since many are highly effective without the use of harsh chemicals. Here is a collection of indoor and outdoor home treatments using common or easily accessible substances.
Spray Lemon Infusion
Lemon is a natural flea repellent that is safe for use on most materials. To prepare the spray, bring two cups of water to a boil and add two lemons, rinds intact, that have been thinly sliced. Simmer the mixture for thirty minutes, then remove it from the heat and let it stand overnight. In a spray bottle, strain the liquid and add a drop of vinegar. Shake your homemade flea spray before use and apply a thin mist to pet bedding, furniture, and carpets, testing an inconspicuous area to ensure colorfastness.
Salt
Finely ground table or sea salt can be used on carpets to successfully dry out and kill fleas and flea eggs, but it should not be used in high humidity due to the salt's tendency to clump and adhere. Spread a thin layer of salt over the affected area and knead it into the fibers for optimal effects. Allow it to sit on the carpet overnight while reducing foot activity, then vacuum it the following day.
Nematodes
Beneficial nematodes are harmless to humans, animals, plants, and the environment. They prey on the larvae of fleas and other dangerous insects, such as grubs and termites, and are available at a variety of home improvement stores and nurseries. Mix with water per the instructions on the package and spray in shaded areas to help control fleas.
The mineral Diatomaceous Earth
As a drying agent, diatomaceous earth can be used to treat flea infestations around your home and property. Use a product that is safe for humans and animals, but be sure to protect your eyes, skin, and lungs while applying since this tiny powder may cause irritation if inhaled. Since dampness renders this material useless, be sure to only apply it in areas with a strong flea population.
Cedar
Fleas are naturally repulsed by the scent of cedar, making them an effective flea repellent for yard applications. For optimal results, scatter cedar chips around the perimeter of your yard and in locations where fleas have been spotted.
Plants
Numerous plants contain oils, smells, or chemicals that are unpleasant to fleas and can be used to repel them. By strategically planting these plants throughout your home and property, you can diminish or eliminate the flea population, as fleas will be attracted to more pleasant environments. Our list of plants consists of the following:
You may keep fleas, mosquitoes, and other pests away from your house and garden by planting flea- and other insect-repelling plants, flowers, and herbs around your patio, entryways, windows, and areas where your pets like to rest or roam. Eliminating weeds from the yard will also aid with flea control.
