Bermuda grass is heat- and drought-tolerant but requires regular care. Regular mowing, fertilization, annual and weekly deep watering, regular weed control, and once-per-week deep watering are all necessary to maintain a height of one-half- to two-and-a-half inches. Here are the details for each topic.
Mow
- Keep your height between one-half and two-and-a-half inches.
- When the grass turns green, start mowing in spring.
- You should mow your lawn as often as possible so that only one-third of the grass blades are removed at once
- Use a razor-sharp mower blade.
- Do not bag unless you are scalping for your first spring mow.
Water
- Only water as necessary
- Water the soil deeply once per week.
Aerate
- Fertilizer application is delayed until the beginning of summer.
- Learn more about how to aerate your lawn and why it is important for a green, lush lawn.
Weed Control
- After winter injury, apply pre-emergent herbicides to spring and summer weeds.
- Post-emergence applications can be used to control broadleaf weeds. Follow label instructions
- Limit the number of applications of herbicides to two or three per year.
Fertilize
- A soil test is the first step to fertilization. The results are then used to select and apply the correct nutrients. We can help.
